Nine

Sabine reappears ten minutes later with a young blonde woman who I vaguely recognise in tow.

"Right, Willow, Azíl, this is Mona, she's one of the young archaeologists responsible for the find here."

Ah, that's why I recognise her, she's one of the people being honoured here today.

"Mona, this is my friend, Willow, she owns Cauldron Coffee Shop."

"It's nice to meet you," Mona says, holding out her hand for me to shake. "I love your chai tea lattes."

"Thank you."

"Yes, yes, we all love Willow's drinks," Sabine says offhandedly. "And this is Azíl, he..." she trails off, clearly not knowing what to say.

"It's nice to meet you, Azíl," Mona says, shaking his hands.

Sabine takes a deep breath. "This probably isn't going to be the best place to talk about it, but Mona is a talented curse breaker."

"I wouldn't go that far," she responds.

Sabine all but rolls her eyes. "By twenty, she had already broken a curse on herself without the countercurse."

"Well, yes, I did do that," Mona agrees. "But I did have help."

"You didn't have the countercurse?" I ask, a little in awe of the young witch in front of me. Everyone knows you can't do that. Except that she apparently did.

"It's a long story. There were two spells that got permanently entwined because of some magical glue, which I guess means there wasn't a proper countercurse. It took some doing, but here I am no longer producing magical kittens every time I try to do magic."

I blink a few times, trying to process the sheer amount of information she's giving me right now. Not only has she managed to create a countercurse to an existing spell, something very few people have ever been able to do before, but she's also capable of producing living beings with magic, even while under a curse.

That means she's immensely powerful in terms of magical potential.

Understanding dawns on me.

Sabine nods, clearly managing to follow my train of thought, even if I haven't said any of it out loud. "I thought Mona might be able to help with your predicament," she says.

"Are you suffering from a curse?" Mona asks. "I've been working on a paper with my friend about what should be possible for countercurses. I'd be happy to help if I can so long as I can use it as part of my research."

I let out a sigh of relief. "It isn't me that has a curse, it's a friend." I resist the urge to look at Azíl, knowing that he won't want me to give him away right now. "But I know they'd appreciate it."

"Great. I can come by the coffee shop if you think that's the best place for us to meet?"

I nod. "Please do. I'll give you free hot drinks for life."

She lets out a small laugh. "You might regret that, I'm about to start my Masters degree at Grimalkin."

"And she has three boyfriends," Sabine adds.

"I'd be more worried about the nine kittens who refuse to grow up," Mona responds brightly. "They're the ones that cause the most trouble.
